China Trade Mission – The Great Wall Of China

The Great Wall Of China
One of the most famous stops was saved for our last full day in China, The Great Wall. Our group left early to head up into the mountains to Badaling to tour the Great Wall. The Great Wall was built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 6th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. The Great Wall stretches over 6,400 km (4,000 miles) from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia, but stretches to over 6,700 km (4,160 miles) in total .It has been estimated that somewhere in the range of 2 to 3 million Chinese died as part of the centuries-long project of building the wall.
Although it is a myth that the Great Wall can be seen from space, it is a site that is spectacular none the less. Over 1 million people a year visit this ancient monument of the growth of China and its heritage

The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the mid-Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the Emperor and his household, as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government. Built from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 square metres. Construction lasted 15 years, and required more than a million workers.
The Beijing Central Business District

This afternoon, we met with key Beijing business leaders. Amoung the group of leaders were executives from China Life Insurance which gave us an update on the relief efforts following the earthquake in Sichuan that killed over 69,000 people. The Beijing Central Business District (CBD) is the primary area of finance, media, and business services in Beijing, China. Beijing CBD occupies 3.99 sq km of the Chaoyang district on the east side of the city.
Wushu Kung Fu Show

The term wushu consists of two Chinese terms. Wu, meaning, military, and shù, which translates into discipline. The 2008 China Investors Field Trip watch a Wushu Kung Fu show where this ancient art is demonstrated. Wushu is one of the most artistic of all the martial arts. The show combines both open hand techniques and a variety of traditional Chinese kung fu weapons. Wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts.

China Trade Mission – Beijing – Imperial Palace – Tiananmen Square

Beijing – One of the World’s Great Cities
Today our tour visited Tiananmen Square and The Forbidden City’s Imperial Palace. We had a special tour of the living quarters and some of the inner areas of the Imperial Palace. After lunch we will be meeting with silk, jewelry and the museum business leaders to discuss the role of the open market system in the Chinese economy.

The Imperial Palace

The design of the Forbidden City, from its overall layout to the smallest detail, was meticulously planned to reflect philosophical and religious principles, and above all to symbolise the majesty of Imperial power. Some noted examples of symbolic designs include:
- Yellow is the colour of the Emperor. Thus almost all roofs in the Forbidden City bear yellow glazed tiles
- The main halls of the Outer and Inner courts are all arranged in groups of three — the shape of the Qian triagram, representing Heaven. The residences of the Inner Court on the other hand are arranged in groups of six — the shape of the Kun triagram, representing the Earth
- The sloping ridges of building roofs are decorated with a line of statuettes lead by a man riding a phoenix and followed by an imperial dragon. The number of statuettes represents the status of the building — a minor building might have 3 or 5.
- The layout of buildings follows ancient customs laid down in the Classic of Rites. Thus, ancestral temples are in front of the palace. Storage areas are placed in the front part of the palace complex, and residences in the back
Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square has great cultural significance as a symbol because it was the site of several key events in Chinese history. The Tiananmen Gate was first built in the 1420s in the Ming Dynasty.
Tiananmen Square has been the site of a number of political events and student protests. These include the proclamation of the People’s Republic of China by Mao Zedong on October 1, 1949; annual mass military displays, and of course the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

China Trade Mission – Beijing – The Northern Capitol

Beijing – The Northern Capitol
Today we arrived in Beijing. Beijing is home to many companies featured on our China Stock Digest model portfolio. We were all amazed to see all the Olympic stadium venues and the vast new high rise developments that fill the skyline. Our first evening here was brought to a close by a great Peking Duck Dinner. See below where I recap the food that we have enjoyed during the 2008 China Investors Field Trip. While in Beijing, we will be staying at the China World Hotel.

Beijing, formerly known in English as Peking is the capital of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Beijing City was established over 3,000 years ago and was called Jin City in the Western Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC – 771 BC). Beijing is China’s second largest city, after Shanghai and a major transportation hub, with railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the entry point of many international flights to China. Beijing is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates.
The metropolitan area of Beijing is home to over 12 million people. Financial industry is one of the most important industries of Beijing accounting for over 70% of its GDP. Beijing’s real estate and automobile sectors have continued to boom in recent years. The Beijing central business district is home to a variety of corporate regional headquarters, shopping precincts, and high-end housing. Beijing is increasingly becoming known for its innovative entrepreneurs and high-growth start-ups.Though Shanghai is seen as the economic centre of China based on the numerous large corporations based there, Beijing is the center for Chinese entrepreneurship.
Urban Beijing is known for being a centre of pirated goods and anything from the latest designer clothing to the latest DVDs can be found in markets all over the city, often marketed to expatriates and international visitors.

People native to urban Beijing speak the Beijing dialect, which belongs to the Mandarin subdivision of spoken Chinese. Rural areas of Beijing Municipality have their own dialects.
Beijing is home to a number of colleges and universities, including several well-regarded universities of international stature, such as Tsinghua University and Peking University.
Records show that Beijing has been an inhabited city for more than three thousand years and has endured invasions by warlords and foreign powers, devastating fires, the rise and fall of powerful imperial dynasties and has emerged each time as a strong and vibrant city.
Beijing – Peking Duck and The Food Of China

The most asked question about the China Trade Mission – China Investors Field Trip is, “What kind of food do we eat?” Well, I am here to tell you that we eat at some of the absolute best restaurants available. We have a change to enjoy true authentic Chinese food (not the stuff we see back home) at 4 and 5 star restaurants in each stop. Many of the menus will have a continental type selection for those less adventurous.
Our first night in Beijing we had Peking Duck. The chef above was preparing our meal.
Peking Duck, or Peking Roast Duck is a famous duck dish from Beijing that has been prepared since the Yuan Dynasty, and is now considered one of China’s national foods. Ducks are bred specially for the dish, which after 65 days are prepared and seasoned before being roasted in a closed oven. The cooked Peking Duck is traditionally carved in front of the diners and served in three stages. First, the skin is served dipped in sugar and garlic sauce. The meat is then served with steamed pancakes scallions and sweet noodle sauce. The diners spread sauce, and optionally sugar, over the pancake. The pancake is wrapped around the meat with the vegetables and eaten by hand.
This is truly a taste like no other. Superb! The Peking Duck Dinner is definitely worth travelling half way around the world to enjoy.

China Trade Mission – Hangzhou & West Lake Tour

Hangzhou & West Lake Tour
Today our group of China investors depart for Hangzhou and the West Lake area. This is some of the most beautiful area of China. As one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China for much of the last 1,000 years, Hangzhou is also well-known for its beautiful natural scenery, with the West Lake as the most well-known location.
Hangzhou is a sub-provincial city located in the Yangtze River Delta. The population of the Hangzhou/West Lake area is estimated to be over 6.4 million.

Hangzhou’s industries have traditionally been textile, silk and machinery, but electronics and other light industries are developing, especially since the start of the new open economy in 1992. Toshiba has its only overseas production plant for laptop computers here. Wahaha, the nation’s largest beverage company, is headquartered in the city. Alibaba is an e-commerce/e-auction company based in the city. The GDP per capita was Â¥61,313 (US$8.063B), ranked no. 8 among 659 Chinese cities.
Tea is an important part of Hangzhou’s economy and culture. Hangzhou is best known for originating Longjing, a famous variety of green tea. The most famous being Xi Hu Long Jing. Known as the best type of Long Jing tea, Xi Hu Long Jing is grown near Xi Hu in Hangzhou, hence its name.
Hangzhou is also known for its artistic creations, such as silk, umbrellas, and Chinese hand-held folding fans.
West Lake Boat Cruise

Our China Trade Mission – the 2008 China Investors Field Trip – take a boat cruise on West Lake to see the magnificent scenery that surrounds this ancient and beautiful area.
West Lake is a famous fresh water lake located in the historic center of Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province of eastern China. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with an area of around 4.04 square miles. The distance from north to south is about 1.99 miles, and east to west, 1.74 miles. The average depth of West Lake is 7.5 feet.
West Lake is not only famous for its picturesque landscape, it is also associated with many scholars, national heroes and revolutionary martyrs, thus embracing many aspects of Chinese culture. In addition, many ancient buildings, stone caves and engraved tablets in surrounding areas are among the most cherished national treasures of China, with significant artistic value.
As the pictures indicate, this is a beautiful area in China. There is a famous Chinese song that talks about the West Lake area. I thought I would share it with you.
“Ripping water shimmering on sunny day,
Misty mountains shrouded the rain;
Plain or gaily decked out like Xizi;
West Lake is always alluring.”

Shanghai – The Paris of the East

Shanghai – The Paris of the East
Jim Trippon reporting to you live from Shanghai. Today our China Trade Mission the 2008 China Investors Field Trip arrived in Shanghai. Shanghai is the largest city in China an one of the largest urban areas in the world. The estimated population is over 20 million in the extended Shanghai metro area.
Shanghai’s origin was a fishing and textile town. But the modern Shanghai, (as seen in the last picture of this blog), has grew and become a multinational hub of finance and business. The picture above is one I took of the Shanghai’s Pudong Skyline. The Pearl Tower also known as the Shanghai Oriental Broadcasting tower is an icon to travelers worldwide. Shanghai is mainland China’s center for commerce and finance which is no surprise it is also the world’s fastest growing economy.

While in Shanghai, we will be staying at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai. I told everyone that I would continue to show you the 5 star hotels that we stay on this trip. You can visit their site at: Grand Hyatt Shanghai.
Grand Hyatt Shanghai is the ‘highest hotel in the world’ (53rd to 87th floors of the Jin Mao Tower), in the centre of Pudong, Shanghai’s financial and business district. The Hotel provides easy access to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shanghai World Financial Centre and the International Conference Centre.

Our group will meet with local city government leaders to take a tour of the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Oriental Pearl Tower is located at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong district. The spire stands 1535 ft high and the top floor is 1148 feet high. The tower features 11 spheres, big and small. The two biggest spheres, along the length of the tower, have diameters of 50 m (164 ft) for the lower and 45 m (148 ft) for the upper. They are linked by three columns, each 9 m (30 ft) in diameter. The highest sphere is 14 m (46 ft) in diameter.

Pudong is a New Open Economic Development Zone in Shanghai and has emerged as China’s financial and commercial capitol. Pudong houses the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Lujiazui Trade Zone and the Shanghai World Financial Center. Pudong’s gross domestic product reached an estimated RMB270 billion (US$38.5 billion) in 2008. This total has now surpassed that of 6 provincial-level entities and is a figure that lies above most of the world’s countries.
Pudong used to be mainly farmland and countryside until 1990, when the Chinese government decided to set up as a Special Economic Zone. The western tip of the Pudong district was designated to be the new financial hub of modern China called the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone. The population of Pudong is estimated to be over 1.8 million.

Tonight we visited a acrobat show. It was great to see the Chinese culture and the rich tradition that surrounds the Chinese people.

The 10th China Hi-Tech Fair will be held in Shenzhen from

Day 6 Shenzhen – China Trade Mission

After we depart from Macau, our next destination is the port city of Shenzhen on China’s Mainland. I am especially fond of Shenzhen since it has a sister city relationship with my hometown Houston, Texas.
Upon arrival in Shenzhen we will be greeted with a reception of the local Shenzhen City Government officials and have a brief presentation of the local economic growth of this vast and growing city. Later in the afternoon we will have a tour of the Shenzhen container port with a guided tour led by port authority officials. While in Shenzhen, we will be staying at the 5 star, Marco Polo Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is sub-provincial administrative status in southern China’s Guangdong province. Shenzhen is due north of Hong Kong. Shenzhen became China’s first – and ultimately most successful – Special Economic Zone under the economic liberalization from the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping. 20 years ago, Shenzhen was a small sleepy fishing village of about 200,000, is not one of the largest container port cities in Southeast Asia with a poplulation of over 12 million. Shenzhen has become one of the largest cities in the Pearl River Delta region, and has become one of the enconomic giants of China. Shenzhen is home to the largest manufacturing base in the world.

Shenzhen has been the fastest growing city in China for the past 30 years. The Shenzhen population structure is divided into two opposing groups: intellects with a high level of education, and migrant workers with little or no education. In June 2007 statistics show that over 20% of China’s PhD’s worked in Shenzhen. A large number of people travel from Hong Kong to work in Shenzhen each day, while a large number of students travel from Shenzhen to Hong Kong daily to study. Each day, both groups must travel through customs and immigration checkpoints since the travel between the two is restricted and highly regulated.

Shenzhen’s GDP totaled just over $100 billion USD in 2007, up by 14.7 percent over the previous year. The Shenzhen economy grew by 16.3 percent yearly from 2001 to 2005 on average. Shenzhen is a major manufacturing center in China. In the 1990s, Shenzhen was described as, “one highrise a day and one boulevard every three days.” The Shenzhen skyline has 23 buildings at over 600 feet tall, including the Shun Hing Square (the 9th tallest building in the world).

Day 5 Macau – China Trade Mission

Macau – Day 5 China Trade Mission
“The customer in Las Vegas comes into the casino to be entertained… The Chinese customer walks into the casino to face destiny. They are here to do battle – and strike it rich.” – local Macau casino manager, on the Chinese love of gambling.
Today is our last full day in Macau. Today, our China trade mission will meet with Macau real estate experts to show the China trade delegation the thriving and growing city of Macau. This will be followed by a city tour to give our group of investors first-hand knowledge of the continue growth of the Chinese economy. The evening will be topped off by a traditional Portugese dinner.

Macau has become the Asian Las Vegas. Gambling revenues are the driving force behind the Macau economy. The new Macau is an extraordinary opportunity for investors. Macau’s economy jumpted 20.1% in the 4th quarter of 2006, topping the 3rd quarter’s growth rate of 18.8%. Growth rates in the double digits have been common place for the last five years. And the growth will continue…
PricewaterhouseCoopers recently predicted that Macau’s casino-gambling revenues would increase at 16% a year, reaching $12 billion in 2010.
It is illegal to gamble in China… except in Macau.

Thanks to gambling, tiny Macau has grown so fast that it actually overtook Las Vegas in 2006 to become the world’s biggest gambling destination. Yes, more money is gambled in Macau than anywhere in the world, including Las Vegas.
- Sands Macau’s owner, Las Vegas Sands, has seen stock more than triple since its December 2004 IPO.
- Wynn Macau’s owner, Wynn Resorts, has seen its stock shoot up 7X’s since 2002.
- Melco International, controlled by gambling mogul Stanley Ho, has gone up 18X since December 2003.
- Hong Kong-listed Shun Tak Holdings, a Macau-focused conglomerate, has more than quadrupled since Dec 2003.

So why is Macau so much better than Vegas?
The Chinese people love to gamble. And those streaming to Macau bet big $$$$… much more than Americans. They prefer table games like baccarat to the cheaper slot machines popular in Vegas. As I looked for the right way to play what’s going on in Macau, I found the opportunity couldn’t be more obvious. It’s Macau real estate. People are pouring in. But there is no land. (If Macau were shaped like a square, it’d be 3 miles long by 3 miles wide.) The government estimates as many as 100,000 new construction jobs are under way in Macau. In the next year, 17,000 foreign workers are expected to move to the tiny city because of the gaming industry.
Tomorrow, we head to Mainland China. Our first stop will be the exciting and growing city of Shenzhen.

Macau – The Monte Carlo of the Orient

Macau – The Monte Carlo of the Orient
Prior to leaving Hong Kong, we will meet with the Hong Kong Monitary Authority and learn about the valuation of the Hong Kong Dollar. Government officials tell us about the link between the value of the US dollar and the Hong Kong Dollar. After checking out of the Intercontinental Grand Stanford Hotel, we will head to Aberdeen Harbor for a tour and lunch at the famous floating restaurant.
After lunch we will depart for Macau. The largest casino gaming city in the world.
Macau also known as East Las Vegas. Gambling in Macau can be divided into three different categories: casino games, horse racing and greyhound racing. There is also sports betting and a number of lotteries.
According to official statistics, gambling taxes form 70% of Macau’s government income. Macau has twenty-eight casinos, of which the biggest is the The Venetian Macau. They all operate under a government franchise and under a common set of rules. Many forms of gambling are legal there, such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette, boule, Sic bo, Fan-Tan, keno and slot machines. The most popular game by far is baccarat with VIP high-roller baccarat.

Many Hong Kong and mainland tourists like gambling in Macau. Few local people in Macau visit casinos, though.
While in Macau, we will visit the Grand Lisboa, which is owned by the Stanley Ho family. If you recall the Stanley Ho family also owns Crown Entertainment and Melco which is a part of the China Stock Digest model portfolio. Ho has 17 casinos that control about half the market share in Macao – a peninsula and two islands off China’s southeastern coast.
We will be staying at American billionaire Sheldon Adelson 3,000-suite Venetian Macau, billed as the largest hotel-casino in the world.

Recently The HVS Group analyzed the Macau gaming market to assess future operating performance, and to project the potential gaming revenue. The local inventory of table games and slots was projected to increase by over 300% over a period of four years. hotel market in Macau, Hong Kong and surrounding Mainland China markets was also investigated to assess the impact of a roundly 50% projected increase in Macau hotel supply over a five year period.
