Manager Jim Trippon Predicts U.S. Market Volatility Will Continue Until
October
Adviser Suggests
Strategies to Profit in a Directionless Market
The past several weeks of market action have been a psychological roller
coaster for investors, according to Jim Trippon, publisher of Global Profits
Alert and a number of other leading investment newsletters.
“The markets’ high volatility gives the illusion that the
stocks are experiencing strong rallies or deep selloffs, but when you
look at week-to-week or month-to-month closing prices, a different picture
appears,” Trippon warns. “Two weeks ago the S&P declined
to 1010, and then rebounded to 1102 before closing right back in the middle
of the range.”
“The market appears to be showing strong up and down trends in the
short term,” Trippon says“, but the fact is we are bouncing
up and down within a very volatile trading range.”
Trippon advises, “Trendless markets are always the riskiest due
to the emotions they trigger among most investors. When the market gets
to the bottom of the range, fear dominates and investors rashly sell out
of positions or even short the market only to face a rebound.” But
the dangers of making the wrong moves are just as great at the top of
a trading range, Trippon warns.
Speaking from his headquarters in Houston, Trippon says the markets have
gone nowhere since May 21st, but the large daily swings have created an
emotional cloud of confusion.
“Looking back at last week’s action, all of the major indices
were hammered after the disappointing consumer sentiment data released
on Friday.” Trippon warns, “also, don’t forget that
the Financial Reform bill passed last week brought even more uncertainty
into the markets.”
The nervousness of the markets was highlighted as the second quarter reporting
season got underway. Trippon points out, “there were 23 major S&P
500 companies that reported earnings, with 19 of them reporting better-than-expected
EPS. There were fifteen that even beat their revenue estimates! But all
companies were punished at the week’s end in a market plunge that
spared no sector.”
The second quarter earnings season will pick up this week as a large number
of companies release their results. Trippon predicts that, “they
will continue to beat most estimates, but the market will continue to
operate in the trading range, as ongoing nervousness about the U.S. economy
gives investors a hare-trigger mentality.”
Trippon’s final word to investors: “There is only one way
to make money in this environment. Trade the range on the upside and the
downside!”
